With homecoming quickly coming up, the school eagerly prepares for the exciting week of events
with a series of activities lined up throughout the week.
The SGA Board takes control of getting the school hyped for the week. They use Instagram and put out announcements to grab the attention of students to inform them of news. They make a list of spirit days for the week including: Tropical Tuesday, Wicked Wednesday, Theme Thursday, and class colors for Friday. Depending on your grade, it is white for seniors, gold for juniors, Carolina blue for sophomores and navy for freshmen. The themes get the students excited for the week and the big day of homecoming.
Junior Loni Dye, a member of the Junior SGA states, “We have been planning our homecoming class board and decorating the hallways and organizing a fundraiser for the prom. The fundraisers include bake sales and a chipotle fundraiser.” Aaron Kim, a senior SGA Spirit Coordinator states, “Me and my partner, Alexis Fath, put a lot of effort into finding fun spirit days that the classes could all participate in,” he says. “I feel like it’ll be a hit.”
Each grade decorated their hallway depending on their theme. Seniors hall is Red Carpet, Juniors hall is Animated Movies, Sophomores halls is Classic Films, and the Freshmen hall is Action Movie. They made posters and painted. They also added ribbons and balloons to brighten up the hallways of school being a reminder of the exciting week that homecoming beholds.
Crystal McGeehan, the Junior Executive Secretary, states that she has been “helping organize pep rallies and the music for the pep rally she is also spreading the word of homecoming!”
The beginning of the pep rally includes a run-out from each sports club onto the field, as they get announced. It then leads to the annual powder puff game where the Junior girls play the Senior girls with the boys coaching. As this is happening the POMS team gives an outstanding performance of their dances. Senior Annie Ribas is a part of the POMS team and states “the team has been practicing hard and working on new moves and dances since the beginning of the school year and they can’t wait to finally show it all off in their new cute uniforms.” The pep rally finally ends with games such as tug of war and the sack race and the students cheer them on as they play.
Once the school day ends, the football team prepares for their big rivalry game against the Long Reach Lightnings for their homecoming game in their new black uniforms. The theme is blackout so all of the students and fans will dress in black in a way to show their support of the football team. This game gets all of the students thrilled for homecoming with all of the good vibes.
On Saturday September 26th, it finally is the day of homecoming. The students get all nicely dressed up in formal attire such as dresses and suits. Junior Megan Tulis states “I got my teal dress online from Lulu’s and the quality and sizing of it is perfect!” and Sophomore Brenna Van Deusen adds, “I was indecisive between two dresses from Beginning Boutique but ended up choosing the silky light pink dress.”
As they finish getting ready, many students plan to take lots of pictures with their friends to capture the moment before heading onto the dance. The dance will be at the stadium field at 7:00 P.M. (unless it rains it will be in the gym). The students must have their I.D. and are not permitted to bring a bag. The dance includes a DJ with fun music to dance along to, yard games, ice cream truck, a fry and nacho truck, and water. Students will then end the night getting picked up around 10:00 P.M.
In all, homecoming is a way to bring the school together and to have a positive start off to the year as the students look forward to the dance and the exciting week of festivities. It gives students a way to connect with each other and make new relationships. Homecoming also helps raise money for future events and the school in general. It is such a beneficial event that creates many memorable memories and brings so much spirit to the school overall.
