Netting her 82nd career goal, senior Marella Virmani is decorated as the all-time leading scorer for Howard County girls varsity soccer.
From earning team MVP awards to Howard County Player of the Year, Virmani stayed humble and motivated through it all. ”I was still focused on the team aspect of the game and played with the same drive even after I broke the record,” says Virmani. As a captain, she expresses her goal to stay focused on and off the field in hopes of reaching her full potential as an athlete.
Over her four years on varsity, Virmani earned multiple county and state honors – including back-to-back Howard County player of the year titles, and becoming the leading goal scorer in the history of Howard County Girls Soccer. However, for Virmani, success has always been more than the trophies; it was personal accomplishment and staying grounded for the team. Virmani says, “My motivation is more from internal validation, but it is definitely a rewarding feeling when others recognize the hard work you put in.” That sense of self-motivation was a key part of her success throughout the season, especially as she came closer to breaking the county scoring record.
Throughout her four years as a forward, Virmani had been quickly getting closer and closer to scoring her 82nd goal, breaking the Howard County scoring record. She expresses that scoring that goal was a revolutionary moment for her soccer career as the previous record holder, Stephanie Lathrop of Glenelg, had been holding the record with 81 career goals since the 2023 fall season. “I remember when the girl before me broke the record.I had always looked up to her so it was even cooler to do it myself,” says Virmani. At that moment, Virmani was not the only one celebrating her broken record, her teammates were just as proud. “We were all super ecstatic when she broke the record, we felt like it was our job as a team to help her achieve these things, and her success made us all very happy,” says junior defender Emily Ma. Junior Anjana Chakrabarty agreed saying, “It felt like a collective team win since we had been with her every day throughout the season.”
For Virmani, breaking the record was not just about personal achievement, but also about leading by example for her team. “Having such a successful and groundbreaking player as our team captain made all of us strive to do our best,” explains Chakrabarty.
Virmani’s dedication and drive to achieve greatness truly helped her attain the collection of titles and awards that she now possesses. “All of us knew she deserved every bit of that title,” says Chakrabarty.
As Virmani looks ahead to her future education at Northwestern University where she was recruited, she leaves behind not just records and titles, but a legacy of determination and tenacity that will inspire the future of River Hill Girls Soccer.
