With the final ball being caught, River Hill Girls Flag Football took the win for the Howard County championship and set a precedent for gender equality in athletics. The Howard County Public School System made the decision to implement a girls flag football program into the catalog of sports for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. Sponsored by Under Armour, the teams are a symbol of equality and developing opportunities for high school girls. “Just knowing we are one of the trailblazers in a mostly male dominated sport feels powerful,” junior Nikita Mohan says. “We help to change perception and open doors for future generations of girls.”
Many of the players described that they found the message that this team sent to other girls even more valuable than the experiences they shared on the team. From getting interceptions to scoring touchdowns, this group of girls strived to make a difference for future teams. “Being a part of the first flag football team felt empowering and special knowing we were making history and setting an example for other girls,” explains senior Sofya Agrawal. This team truly reshaped the future of the game and claimed the championship in the process.
The championship game was between River Hill and Long Reach, the only team that had defeated River Hill Being in the championship game against a team they had previously lost to was a nerve-racking experience, but made the win all the more special and memorable. Mohan says, “Winning the game against them felt so rewarding after the loss in the early season.”
Throughout the match, the lead shifted back and forth. By two touchdowns, River Hill led at halftime, but Long Reach made a fierce comeback in the second half. The clock ran out at regular time, with tied numbers on the scoreboard. River Hill took a moment to strategize before stepping back in the field with confidence. “In order to win, we needed to prevent them from scoring a touchdown, and score one ourselves,” said Mohan.
In the final moments that mattered the most, River Hill’s defense shut down every opportunity for Long Reach to score, and all of the pressure was on Marella Virmani to score a touchdown. To win, Saniya Carter handed the ball off to senior Marella Virmani, who sprinted past the Long Reach defense and into the end zone to secure the win for River Hill. “The game came down to the last few seconds, so it felt so amazing to pull through with the win,” said junior Serena Soldavin.
The players expressed that the win felt amazing, but getting to celebrate with the team was particularly special.. Agrawal described the team dynamic as “supportive and motivating.”
Mohan says, “Together we learned how to play, helping each other and teaching ourselves new skills each time we set foot on the field.” As this was an inaugural season, the girls were certainly new to the rules and plays, but through great coaching, they were able to snag the win. Coach Richmond, the River Hill track coach, stepped up to lead the group of girls through a great season and to a huge win.
As the season came to a close, the girls reminisced on a season filled with fun. Mohan says, “It was such a fun season and I’m sad that it ended so soon.” Many of the girls signed up for this football league after playing in the homecoming flag football game, with low expectations for the outcome of the league. After continuing to improve each week, and the dynamic of the team grew stronger, the girls were pleasantly surprised with the outcome of the season. “I did not think we would make it this far and I definitely did not think we would win the championship, but I am so glad we did,” says Agrawal.
