River Hill Theater Arts is taking a different approach with next year’s fall play. “Trap” auditions took place on June 6 and 7. Students have begun preparing for them by rehearsing their monologues.
“Trap” by Stephan Gregg is an unnerving, exhilarating, and wildly attentive play. River Hill has never done anything like it before.
When auditioning for a play, a lot of preparation is required. Memorizing monologues and choosing audition material is the hardest part of the play process. The stress of wondering if your acting choices will get you the part you want is the most difficult part of everything. Abi Asante, a sophomore, explains how she has been preparing for her audition saying, “I’ve been reading over and saying my monologue out loud and acting it out.” Freshman Penny Tofig relays that she has “read [her] monologue plenty of times” to friends and family to help her memorize it.
Before auditioning, it is important to have the character that you are auditioning for chosen. Freshman Anjali Jain says “Honestly I’d be okay with any role I just want a role”. Junior Victoria Nganga agrees, saying“ I want any role, I don’t have a preference.”
During the actual auditions, they can either go very wrong or they can be very good. Most of the time, people go in there with the attitude that they are going to do well with the audition. Junior Maggie Orlofsaky states “ I think my audition for this play will be okay.” Sophomore Anjali Jain claims “I think it’s going to go okay. I’m scared that I might forget a part”
For many of the plays, the audition process is the same. Many students have participated in performances in the past. whether it be “Clue” or “She Kills Monsters” Junior Victoria says “This is my fourth play at River Hill. “I was ensemble in history theater abridge” I was Mrs. Peacock in “Clue” and Evil TIna in “She Kills Monsters.”
There are many things to look forward to for a play. Whether it be just hanging out with the cast, combat choreography, or blocking and just having fun in general, freshman Penny says “I think it’s very fun to do blocking. I really like that aspect of it. I’m also excited to be in the theater community after Percy Jackson. It was sad to leave everyone, so I’m excited to be back!”
The theater is filled with such exciting things and has such a great community for you. Being a part of a production is exciting because it is a chance to meet new people and seeing the play come together is something to be proud of.
