The Met Gala, an annual event held in Manhattan where celebrities dress according to a specified theme, took place on May 6th this year. The theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which explored how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again. River Hill High School students shared their opinions on the outfits worn by celebrities at this year’s gala.

Layla, a freshman, praised Tyla’s outfit: “Tyla had the best outfit by far. The amount of creativity you must have to make a dress out of sand and still make it look good is insane. It was the most iconic outfit of the night. The dress was unique to her and her music, props to her designer.”

Leah Ball, also a freshman, echoed Layla’s sentiments: “Tyla’s outfit was gorgeous. I really like the style and it went with the theme. Many others also had the same kind of style, but I noticed that some of them really didn’t bother to dress up with creativity. Lil Nas X was wearing some pants and a blazer, it was basic and white and didn’t look as good as the others.” Leah also admired Dua Lipa’s outfit, adding, “Dua Lipa’s outfit was gorgeous, it even matched her hair and was well put together.”

Nora Abujuma, another freshman, had a different perspective: “I don’t know the point of the Met Gala, what charity is it for? The outfits don’t make sense sometimes, but it’s a style. Most of the time celebrities don’t follow the theme and it’s like why even attend if you’re not going to follow the theme? Also, a lot of them I feel dress a bit inappropriately; sure, it’s part of the style but there are better ways to not expose your butt to the whole world.” Nora also mentioned Doja Cat: “Doja Cat is always a cat or dresses up in some bizarre way, which is funny but does not apply to the theme.”

Ellie King, another freshman, shared her views: “I don’t know much about the Met Gala but I do know that people dress up according to theme. I’ve seen on TikTok some of the outfits that the celebrities wore and they were cute, but some of them like Sienna Miller’s outfit were pretty basic and didn’t have much to it.”

Overall, River Hill students had mixed opinions about the Met Gala outfits, with some appreciating the creativity and adherence to the theme, while others were critical of the lack of originality and appropriateness in some of the outfits.
