The top picks for entertainment amongst students at River Hill change from day to day or even minute to minute. New shows, artists, and influencers are able to grab teenagers’ attention by introducing a new, possible obsession. From Euphoria, to Tyler the Creator to new and upcoming podcasts and drama, different genres are sure to beam in the spotlight.
The Emmy-winning show, Euphoria, was on blast the past couple of months. With the drama-filled, emotional season two finale, students constantly shared their feelings and thoughts around the intense ending. Senior Ava Flynn, a big fan of the show, said, “The last episode was really good and intriguing, pretty much all I wanted for the season finale. I really can’t wait for the next season to sum up everything that happened.” Talking with some other students, most are anxiously waiting for the next, possibly concluding, season to come out in the next two years.
Podcasts are the new form of entertainment as you can listen to them when you are driving to practice or doing your homework. Originally, podcasts were created to inform and educate but now social media influencers are spreading out to other platforms like Apple Podcast or Spotify. TikTok Star Josh Richards, co-host on BFFs, past Youtube vlogger, Logan Paul, co-host of Impulsive, or Social Media influencer Emma Chamberlain, host of Anything Goes With Emma Chamberlain all stepped out of their original platforms into the new way to publicize themselves and their content. “I love listening to podcasts because it sounds like I am having a conversation with these people,” continues Junior Katelyn Sharp, “it is so nice to not have to sit down and watch something but still get all the drama in the social media world as I please!”
Capital One Arena is known for hosting the Capitals and the Wizards but also puts on great music events as it is the biggest stadium for artists to stop in DC. On March 7th, Tyler the Creator’s, Call Me If You Get Lost Tour came to DC. Many students who attended, posted on Instagram and Snapchat about the amazing performance. “The setlist was absolutely amazing and I loved the whole vibe of the concert,” explains Junior Leah Nesmith, “the concert was a ten out of ten. I cried I laughed, I lived, I had the best time of my life.” Concerts are the one thing that can change someone’s life. Junior Andre Seanez attended the same concert saying, “It was my first time on the floor for a concert. I was so close to the stage it was insane and I will never forget it!”
Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and TikTok are places where teenagers post what is happening in their daily lives while also allowing celebrities and influences to do the same. Having access to what is going on with the people in the spotlight, is interesting to follow. For example, the whole world knows the man of the hour, Kanye West. The so-called “Humble King,” is publicly posting all of his emotions about his divorce from Kim Kardashian.“ Apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter allow celebrity drama to grow more and more and so it’s hard to avoid it,” explained Sophomore Becca Karon, “am I entertained by this situation? Not especially, but it’s certainly interesting to see what goes on in the celebrity world.”
