Disclaimer: Yes, this is an article about the paper for the paper!
Since 2014, The River Hill Current has been writing articles to inform and provide entertainment for students, but how many students really read it?
Many students shared that they typically don’t read The Current. A common theme among them was that they only read the articles when the newspaper is printed out and distributed amongst the school and do not frequently visit the newspaper’s website. Unfortunately, the Journalism department is unable to print every issue every month due to budget concerns.
Many shared that they found it easier and more accessible to read the printed edition. Although the department can’t print an edition every month, there are other ways that editors can make their articles easily accessible to students. Junior Kula B Thompson suggested that we put “a QR code on the announcements.” She goes on to explain that not only will this make students more aware when new articles are released, but it will also make it easier to access the website.
Accessibility seems to be one of the main issues; sophomore Sarah Drissel also shared that she doesn’t “know where to find [the articles].” Many others shared that they were unaware of the website or where to find it.
Drissel suggests putting “a link in Canvas” to the website, or sending “a message out every time [The Current] release[s] a new issue” to make more students aware of the coming articles. Although River Hill journalism has an Instagram, students suggested making it more interactive and incorporating things like polls or a compliments page sharing compliments from students to other students.
As far as the engagement levels of the articles, people seem to enjoy them when they do get a chance to read them. There are a large variety of articles written by the journalism staff. Topics include informative news articles, pop culture, movie reviews, recipes, school events and so much more. A variety of articles appeal to different people with varying interests as our writers have many different interests that are expressed in their chosen topics. If you’re reading this article right now, it seems that you found The Current website! Make sure to spread the word and feel free to give us feedback!
