At River Hill High School, sports play a substantial part of the school’s spirit and popularity. Primarily due to the overall success of the teams in all three seasons, schools all around the state and region look up to River Hill.
The athletic success on this campus is due to the student athletes who attend, many of whom are not simply single sport athletes. Senior Tiffany Howell is just one of many examples.
As a two sport varsity athlete (basketball in the winter and track in the spring), Tiffany’s got a lot on her plate.
“It’s really stressful at times, but at other times the after school activities are a great way to relieve the stress that school work brings me,” said Howell.
But Tiffany does not just participate in these sports just to relieve stress or for free time activity. Tiffany has winning talent and wants to win. “As much success as our school has had, I feel obligated to bring it even more success, in either sport I play,” she said.
Jessie Hopkins, another senior on the basketball team explained about her talented teammate. “She’s just so relaxed on the court. She just seems to know what she’s doing all the time. Even off the court, she’s a tremendous leader and always helps those who need it,” Hopkins said.
Another teammate senior Lauren Owens said, “Tiffany’s work on the court reflects her work off the court. A great leader on and off the court, as well as a great talent on the court and in the classroom as well.”
Although Tiffany is a basketball player and a sprinter on the track and field team, track and field is her area of concentration. In fact, Tiffany has talked to the track and field coach at Towson University and hopes to run there next year. “I’m not sure what’s going to happen yet with all that, but I hope I can run collegiately next year for Towson,” she said.
Track coach John Difato said, “There’s one word to describe Tiffany and that word is (fast). She’s one of the fastest girls I’ve seen and it’s a unique quickness that makes her so special.”
With just a few weeks left in her basketball season, Tiffany looks forward to her track and field season. And with just a few months left in her high school career, Tiffany is anxious for what comes next in her athletic career.
“I will definitely miss high school athletics and I know that if i run collegiately, it won’t be the same. It will be less fun and more of a job, but whatever happens, I look forward to it.”
