The first day of high school is always nerve-racking, especially for Freshman. High school is a brand new experience for incoming Freshman. The journey is immensely different than middle school, and for some, it takes a little while to adapt to the high school lifestyle.
In high school, there’s much more homework, the classes are harder, and it starts an hour earlier than middle school. Those are probably the most overwhelming parts of high school though.
On the first day of high school, some people just don’t really know what to expect. Kyle Henry, a freshman football player, said that he was excited to begin his high school adventure. “I couldn’t wait for it to start,” said Henry. “I saw all the fun that my older brother was having and I couldn’t wait to get started myself. I’m excited about all the new opportunities.”
Mr. Gray, a 9th grade U.S. History teacher, didn’t sense any nervousness in his new freshman students. “Most of the kids were energetic,” Gray said, “however, it definitely depends on if the kids have any friends in their class.” Mr. Gray also said that the kids responded really well to all of the icebreaker activities that were conducted on the first day of school. “The kids were really engaged in all the activities that we did,” Gray said.
Another freshman, Nick Laumann, felt the same way as Kyle. “I had mixed emotions about it,” he said to me, “but I was just ready for the school year to finally start.” The thing that he looked forward to the most about coming to River Hill is making new friends and meeting new people.
Elijah Taylor, a freshman soccer player, felt differently compared to Nick and Kyle. “I was nervous for the change, but I was excited to meet new people,” Taylor said. “After the first day, I wasn’t nervous at all. When asked about which schedule he prefers, Elijah said that he would choose the high school schedule over the middle school schedule. “As crazy as it sounds, I actually like waking up early, and I like the high school schedule better than my old middle school schedule because we get out of school earlier too.”
The common theme seemed to be that almost every freshman was excited and eager to start their first day of school at River Hill. They all also were looking forward to meeting people from other middle schools that would be joining them in their classes this year. Most of them didn’t have those first day jitters that freshmen in the past years have had.
Starting at a new school is always an exhilarating feeling and it’s awesome to see that the class of 2021 at River Hill feels just that way. Hopefully, each and every new hawk will have an amazing year at River Hill high school.
