The results of march madness are in and they are not what you would expect them to be. The UConn Huskies came out on top and are the NCAA Champions. Through many ups and downs with top seeds losing early, there were no perfect brackets left after the 3rd day.
For those who don’t know, every year for the majority of March there is a tournament for college basketball teams who were good this season. They pick 64 teams and they do a round robin with all 64 teams until there is just 1 team left who hasn’t lost a game. This year that team was UConn.
Senior Matthew Behrmann is a UConn fan and had them going pretty far. “I had UConn in the final 4 but I had them losing to Houston, if I’m being honest I watched them all season and just didn’t think they had it in them to go all the way.” Matthew won 1 out of 3 of the bracket contests that he did.
Junior Matthew Sheppard had what most people would call a terrible bracket. Although there were a lot of upsets it was definitely possible to still have a solid bracket. “I just picked the teams that I thought were going to win. I went with my gut and had Alabama winning the whole thing.” Sadly they came up short, losing to San Diego State in the sweet 16, which was much earlier than most people expected.
There has been research done showing that it is nearly impossible to have a perfect bracket. One stat from the NCAA website showed that if 1 person picked 1 grain of sand from anywhere in the world and you had to pick that exact grain of sand, you would have a 23% greater chance of choosing that 1 grain of sand than you would at picking a perfect bracket.
Junior Nate Bacon just picked all the higher seeds. He did no research at all and just picked based off of the number next to the name of the school. It’s safe to say that he did not do very well because there were a lot of upsets. Also, this year of all the years there were the lowest seeded teams in the final 4 ever. “I literally can’t believe that, obviously I wasn’t expecting a perfect bracket but I was expecting for all the 1 seeds to make it past the first round.”
Overall this year’s March Madness tournament was full of surprises. Although there were no perfect brackets, there were many close calls and plenty of brackets were made. UConn coming out on top was unexpected, but throughout the tournament they proved that they deserved to win.
