After three months of in-person school for the first time in almost two years, students are looking forward to Thanksgiving break, but some are unhappy with the length of it. Like in previous years, the Monday and Tuesday the week of Thanksgiving will be half-days for all students, followed by three days off of school and the weekend.
Although a five-day break doesn’t seem like an extensive amount of time, it is the first long break that students will get this school year. However, many students do not think that the break is long enough, considering how stressful the current time is for everyone, especially students. With a pandemic, the beginning of a new quarter, and being in-person for school for the first time in what seems like forever, some believe that they deserve more time off.
Sophomore Vipin Chaganti remarked that Thanksgiving this year “should be longer,” with sophomore Rami Almekkawi agreeing that the break is “too short.” Senior Simon Hu wondered “What even is the point of those… half days?” If the Monday and Tuesday prior to the break were days off instead of half days, the break would be nine days including weekends, which is significantly longer compared to the current break.
On the other hand, some students think that the length of the break is just fine. Sophomore Sierra Collis added “it could be longer, but I think it’s reasonable.” Sophomore Grace Leska agrees, stating, “I think it’s the perfect amount of time honestly- I like that we actually have time for family and have 5 days off basically.” Grace and others described how the five-day break is just the right amount of time to be able to spend time with your family and celebrate Thanksgiving.
Even if Thanksgiving break is not as long as some students hoped for, it will still provide students with a much needed five-day break to destress from school and spend their time however they would like.
