River Hill High School was buzzing with excitement as students, teachers, families and teammates gathered to celebrate National Signing Day. This annual tradition honors seniors committing to play their sport at the collegiate level. The day recognizes not only the athletes’ achievements but also the years of work, discipline, and support that helped them reach this milestone. It’s a moment that brings together coaches, teammates, and the wider community to celebrate the future ahead.
Senior Ryan Walsh, a standout baseball player, was all smiles as he prepared to sign with the University of Tampa, sporting the team’s scarlet and gold colors and surrounded by the people who supported him most. Walsh chose Tampa because of its strong academics and competitive baseball environment. “It just felt like the right fit,” he said. “The program is competitive, and the school has the kind of education I want.”
Before making his decision, Walsh also considered offers from McDaniel and Shenandoah, and spoke with coaches from Villanova and Yale. Even with so many options, putting pen to paper made his choice feel official. “Signing Day feels more real and like a bigger deal than decision day,” Walsh remarked. “I’m excited to leave [home], excited for my future, and excited to take number 11 with me.” He plans to major in business and is eager to begin the next phase of his baseball career.
Fellow senior Jonny Norwood, also committing for baseball, celebrated his commitment to Moravian University, reflecting on the journey that brought him there. “I’m most excited about having my family and friends around me to celebrate,” he said. “To me, it feels like a recognition of the work I’ve put in to get to this point.”
Norwood described the recruiting process as one of the toughest parts of his athletic career. “It was challenging,” he said. “With email and social media, every college has thousands of recruits, so I had to find ways to stand out.” Finding the right program didn’t come easily. “Not every college was a fit for me, and I wasn’t a fit for every college,” he added. “Deciding where I wanted to go, and who really wanted me, was the hardest part.”
Former River Hill student Camille Neismith, now attending St. John’s College High School, also marked a major milestone as she officially committed to Southern Methodist University (SMU) for women’s basketball. Although she transferred two years ago, she still carries pride for her roots at River Hill.
Naismith claimed she chose SMU because it offered the perfect blend of athletics and academics. “The coaches were so supportive from the beginning, and the campus felt like home,” she described. “I could really see myself growing there, as a player and a student.”
Like the others, she recalled the intensity of the recruiting process. “Balancing school, travel and college visits was definitely stressful,” she said. “But it made choosing SMU even more meaningful. I knew it was the right place.”
Not all athletes participated in the fall Signing Day ceremony. Twins Lauren and Marella Virmani, who have committed to Northwestern University for track and field, opted to delay their official signing until the spring. The sisters explained that waiting allowed them more time to plan and celebrate the moment with family and teammates.
“Since our main track season is in the spring, we wanted our Signing Day to feel really special and connected to our sport,” Lauren explained. Marella added, “It gives us time to really enjoy the celebration and share it with everyone who has supported us throughout the years.” The Virmani twins affirmed that they are excited to represent Northwestern and continue River Hill’s tradition of athletic excellence, looking forward to marking their commitment in a ceremony that aligns with their track season.
As the gym quieted and the tables emptied, families stayed behind to snap photos and soak in the moment. Teammates hugged, coaches offered congratulations and each athlete held up their college gear with pride. The celebration reflected everything Signing Day stands for, hard work, community, and the joy of new beginnings.
For all the students making their final decisions on this day, the signatures on their letters of intent represent years of dedication and the start of a new adventure. River Hill sends them off with excitement, gratitude and immense pride.
