American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter has recently released a new single, “Please Please Please” as of June 6th of this year. Her song “Espresso” was released not long before. The iconic music video ended with Sabrina getting arrested and was followed by the music video of “Please Please Please,” which was filmed inside a jail cell to highlight the contrast between the two songs. While many of her songs are about love and heartbreak, this is different from her others and is about being in a relationship with someone that others don’t approve of.
“Please Please Please” reached peak popularity quickly after it was released, taking over social media and starting various trends on Tiktok.
Listener’s opinions vary on this song. Sophomore Sofia Chudnovsky describes the song explaining that she likes “the intro of the song and how it bridges like a country vibe to pop to an older Hollywood throwback vibe. It’s just crafted really well and stands out compared to her other songs.”
While some think highly of it, others found themselves disliking the new song.“I like it; I think it’s cute,” says sophomore Sanah Ahmed, who rated the song a seven out of ten, “it was better than I was expecting.” She further describes what she thought the song “gave slight Dolly Parton vibes.” Freshman Anjali Jain is even more excited about the new song, expressing that she “would rate Sabrina Carpenter’s song a 100 out of ten.” She further describes her perception of it saying, “It’s so yummy!”
Not everyone had the same opinion about the song. Some have a negative perception. “I would rate it a five,” freshman Zaina Chowdhury relays. She continues saying “I just don’t like the tune and the lyrics aren’t giving” Caitlin Ball, a junior, agrees commenting that “the lyrics are a little weird”. Others have more of a neutral take like junior Katie Lee who rates it “a six out of ten…it’s good but it’s not very catchy” she says. “I definitely like it more than the first time I listened to it though.”
While opinions about the song itself appear to be scattered, many seem to have positive perceptions of the music video. “It’s just really entertaining and it also goes well with what the song is about. It’s like a whole story.” Anjali explains. Sofia agrees stating that she thinks that “the cinematography is amazing, the outfits and overall production quality is so so good and of course the casting is so fitting for the topic of the song.”
Sabrina Carpenter has a lot of popular songs like “Because I Liked A Boy,” “Feather” and “Nonsense.” Even if you don’t typically listen to her songs, you may recognize many of them because they are often played on platforms like Tiktok and Instagram.
