As the spring season starts coming to an end the playoff season is just beginning, both boys and girls varsity lacrosse teams have high hopes for this playoff season. With both teams looking to defend their 2021 regional championships, these teams had to stay focused and determined to keep their regional title.
Playoffs started Friday 7 May, with the girls playing at 4 pm and the boys playing at 5:30 pm against Long Reach at River Hill. Many students attended, and they were excited to watch and support River Hill.
Not only were the students excited, but so were the athletes. Rachel Hennessy, a senior starting defenseman, stated, “I’m so hype for our first game in playoffs, we’re coming prepared, and ready to win another regional title.” Rachel went on to talk about how the team won regionals last year, and she was confident they would have a good run as well this year in the playoffs.
Senior co-captain Ethan Varani, a starter for the boys team, also shared his confidence for playoffs: “I think we have the skill to go far in playoffs, if we are able to focus and perform like I know we can, it will be hard to slow us down.”
The athletes’ confidence comes from one thing, their coaches, The girls coach,Amy Weinberg, and the boys coach, Keith Gonsouland, both have prepared their teams for success in playoffs. Coach Weinberg explains, “I have been preparing my girls since the season started, playoffs are important, but they are well prepared and I’m excited to see how we perform.”
Boys goalie charlie klukun shared how the boys are feeling going into playoffs: “ We are all very ready for playoffs, we have been practicing hard, and I think our hard work will be paying off this playoff season.”
Both River Hill lacrosse teams were well prepared for playoffs this season and they put up a strong fight, both teams repeating as regional champions. Unfortunately, both teams then were defeated in the state quarterfinals. Their hard work is not diminished by the losses, though, and both teams will be able to hoist another regional championship banner in the gym.
