The Baltimore Ravens’ season came to a heartbreaking end on January 4th after a last second loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a finish that left fans stunned and silent.
This game had a lot on the line for the Ravens: not only was it a rivalry matchup, but winning the game meant moving on to the playoffs and continuing their season. The Ravens led the game at the half, 10-3. The fans were confident and excited as the game progressed into the third quarter. However, Pittsburgh put up 10 points in the third quarter, while the Ravens couldn’t connect with anything.
As the clock wound down in the fourth quarter, the Ravens found themselves in position to win only down two. After a late drive that pushed them into field goal range, all eyes turned to rookie kicker Tyler Loop. With three seconds left on the clock and the season on the line, Loop lined up for a 44 yard field goal attempt. The stadium held its breath as the ball was snapped, but the kick missed, sealing the Ravens’ loss and ending their season in the most crushing way possible.
“When the kick missed, everyone in the room just went silent,” said sophomore Maximus August, who was watching the game at his house with a few of his close friends. “We really thought that was it. Three seconds left and a 44-yard field goal felt very makeable, so losing like that was terrible.”
For Ravens fans, the missed kick was devastating, especially because it immediately brought back memories of last season’s tragic playoff loss. In that game, tight end Mark Andrews dropped a potential game-winning pass in the end zone, a moment that still lingers in the minds of the fanbase. Once again, the Ravens were one play away from victory, and once again, that one play went wrong.
“It honestly reminded me of last year with Mark Andrews,” said senior Dominic Wheeler. “It’s tough because it feels like every year it ends on one play that we can’t stop thinking about.”
The loss was not just about the missed field goal, but about how thin the margin for error is in big games. Throughout the night, the Ravens left points on the board with stalled drives and missed chances. While the team fought hard and stayed composed under pressure, those earlier mistakes made the final kick even more important. “The last kick was like the finishing blow, we had a free chance to win the game, and we blew it,” said junior Rian Omar. Against a disciplined Steelers team, there was no room for error.
Despite the outcome, many fans showed support for Loop, “I feel bad for Tyler Loop because that’s so much pressure for a rookie,” said junior Shiv Jaraith. “It always feels like our seasons come down to one moment, and this time it came down to Loop, it was unfortunate,” said sophomore Colin Purdue. Kicking a 44-yard field goal with three seconds left and the season on the line is no easy task. Many believe that not all the blame should be placed on him, and that you should not have to rely on a kicker in the last seconds of the game to secure the win. Still, the reality remains that the missed kick was the deciding factor in the game.
The January 4th loss will be remembered as another painful chapter in recent Ravens history. Much like last year’s dropped pass by Mark Andrews, this season ended with a single moment that changed everything. As the team looks ahead to next year, fans hope the Ravens can finally turn these heartbreaking moments into lessons that will lead into a winning season.
