The 2018 school year for River Hill brings a fruitful amount of new ideas, people and programs. This year, we have the pleasure of receiving two new yet extremely experienced Assistant-Principals, Ms. Hearns and Mr. Scible.
These two new administrators not only have outstanding platforms for their goals during this school year but have already implemented many of them. As many of you noticed, we spent the first week of school practicing our new fire drills, executed by the new admin. These new safety drills exhibit the potential that the admin has, as they already made such large and positive changes to our school.
The most important goal for the beginning of the school year is to “get to know all of the staff and students and to know all of the great things about River Hill”, says Mr. Scible. Both Ms. Hearns and Mr. Scible are trying to become more familiar with River Hill, and as Mrs. McKinley states, they are “building on the River Hill family and sense of community.”
One would think that working at any new job can be a rough transition, but that is not the case with the team of admin at RHHS, as Mrs. McKinley believes “the experience with them has been outstanding, both of them come to us with experience, by sharing those experiences we can keep doing things better.”
Both new admin are very excited to be working at River Hill, and a lot of students are ready for a fresh start and new experiences. Senior Natalie Nichols states that “I’m excited to experience my last year with this new administration. I can’t wait to see what impact they have on the school.” Senior Becca Steinberg agrees, “Even though it’s hard to watch old administration leave, I’m really excited for all the new administration that we have!”
Ms. Hearns took on the role of aiding the ninth grade team, as they have a much larger class than prior years due to the newly implemented jumpstart program. Ms. Hearns loves the new program because it is “open to everyone, it is great to have the opportunity to take those courses and get a leg up on college courses at a lower fee. Students that take this route will have an advantage.” Along with jumpstart, River Hill has also implemented an upperclassman to freshmen mentorship program (make sure to read the article about it on the front page!)
Mr. Scible divulged on how River Hill is different from other schools he has worked in previously, “all schools have the same goal, to educate, but each is unique. Students take a really strong leadership role here at River Hill, I noticed their involvement.” Another aspect of RHHS that Mr. Scible appreciates is “Top of the hill, it is awesome, I learned today about how teachers can participate in it too as well.” Mr. Scible and Ms. Hearns both recognize how large our student participation is, and admire our energized and excited student body.
Mr. Scible and Ms. Hearns found their passion for education and administration despite outside obstacles. Ms. Hearns “was discouraged from being a teacher, but after an internship, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I felt that I could make a bigger impact if I was in a different position.” For Mr. Scible he “didn’t think I wanted to be an educator until I was in college… I had a couple of really influential teachers. I found my calling that way I wanted to find a way I could make an impact on the school” showing the influence that teachers have on students.
The two new administrators prove to be amazing new additions to our school… let’s see what they do next.
