River Hill High School is well-known in Howard County for its tough academics and competitive vibe. As seniors go through their last year, they feel a lot of pressure to meet expectations, which can affect how they feel mentally. Getting into college is a big deal for most of them, and this in itself adds to the stress of an important time in their lives.
Rebecca Sirak, a senior at River Hill, shares her own experiences and how the weight of senior year has had an impact on her. “It can be tough having to juggle school, college applications, and making lasting memories with friends can be overwhelming and the uncertainty of choosing the right college adds to the stress.” To cope with these pressures Rebecca likes to resort to social media. “I find comfort in doing things like napping, browsing TikTok, or going for a run. It’s crucial to take breaks and prioritize mental well-being with all the chaos around senior year.”
David Odubanjo makes similar statements regarding the grueling task of college applications. “It feels like a high-stakes game where every decision shapes your future, the pressure is definitely something I’ve felt over the past couple months, and one bad grade in a class could affect the way colleges look at you.” Despite the challenges, David finds comfort in friendships and the people around him. “Spending time with my friends is my way to chill and relax and it reminds me that there’s more to life than trying to be perfect. Addressing the school’s role in supporting mental health, David acknowledges existing efforts but believes it’s something that should be talked about more. “While our school provides resources, there’s definitely a need for conversations about mental health,” he asserts, “creating a supportive environment where students feel heard and understood is important.”
Iman Mbi on the other hand offers a different perspective, highlighting a sense of detachment from the stress of typical high school seniors. “Nothing has really stressed me out this year, I’ve just been bored.” Iman’s approach to college applications shows this. “I trust that wherever I end up is where I’m meant to be.”
While each senior’s experience varies, the common thread of mental health is something that should be talked about more and the need for continued support and understanding within the River Hill High School community. As these students navigate the final stretch of their high school journey, prioritizing mental well-being alongside academic pursuits remains important. The journey through senior year at River Hill High School comes with its challenges, but it’s also a time for growth, self-discovery, and resilience. By promoting a culture of open communication and support, the school can empower seniors to navigate these tough waters with confidence and resilience.
