Clothes are constantly changing, and fashion trends go in and out of style. Selecting prom dresses this year was especially challenging for River Hill High School juniors. Several factors went into each student’s decision, and their vision was often different than their final choice.
Bethel Bruk, described her dress as, “orange, long, and it has a slit and sequins.” When asked how she selected her dress, the junior explained, “I didn’t want to go to a boutique so I went straight to Windsor. I was like I don’t want a bright color dress but I ended up getting one because I thought it would look good with my skin tone.”
While Bethel used her skin tone as a consideration for the dress, junior Jasna Bhambra had a different issue to ponder. While Jasna has not yet purchased a dress, when asked about a possible color she replied, “Well, I wanted pink but then my friend took pink first, so now I’m going with blue.” Many people who go to prom with a group of friends try to avoid matching and having similar colors or dresses to their friends. Jasna explained that she is looking for a “sequin-y, colorful, slit, and backless” dress upon her friends’ suggestions.
Junior Batu Koroglu details his prom outfit, “it’s a navy suit, and a button up shirt and tie” He has had his outfit for some time, as he explains that “I wore it once to a funeral so now I’m wearing it again cause I’m broke.”
While cost is a factor for some people in their prom outfit quest, others coordinate with either friends or a date. Junior Hasan Mirasyedi illustrates his outfit as “a light gray suit with a black button up, and I’m still deciding if I wanna wear a tie with it or not.” His choice was made as he explains, “my girlfriend is wearing black and silver and she looks really good in hers, so I need to look equally as good as her.”
Jake Miller also has a date to match. While his girlfriend got a blue dress, the specific shade is hard to replicate. The junior says he is “getting a blue tie made from her dress so that the colors match.” His girlfriend’s dress is shortened a few inches, so she decided to wear flats because she feels that the length won’t suit heels.
Other students have different worries. Mahnoor Rao explains that “It was hard to get my parents to agree to a dress and I found a good medium, so I liked it, they liked it, and I got it.” This junior’s dress is “a cream mock neck full length dress, it’s bodycon and it has a bunch of sparkles on it, and it kind of sparkles blue and pink.”
May 12th will be the first prom for the class of 2024. Deciding on outfits can be both fun and stressful for these juniors. Possible criteria for deciding outfits includes avoiding matching with friends, coordinating with dates, considering skin tones, fulfilling parents wishes, and or finding something affordable. While many people have different ideas in mind, the class of 2024 is going to look great at their first prom.
