River Hill’s youngest basketball star, Jaden Martin, heads into his sophomore season feeling positive and confident.
“We have some great players and a fantastic coach. I think this year could be the one we’ve been waiting for,” claimed the Hawks’ starting small forward.
The Hawks have been pushing for another state title ever since 2007, and Martin won’t be satisfied unless they win it all. “If I don’t see a banner hanging up in the gym at the end of the season, I’ll be disappointed.”
Martin will be a huge part of earning that banner, according to his teammates. Senior Ciande Kiragu, who has played for River Hill all four years, claims, “Jaden is going to be very important to our success this year. He has the size, speed, and talent to have a big impact on every game.”
Coach Matt Graves feels that Martin will give the team a boost not only physically, but also mentally. “I think I can look to Jaden as well as other younger players to be leaders on this team.” Jaden embraces a leadership role, hoping he can do everything he can to help his teammates.
“As a leader, I can set an example for my teammates not only in games, but practice too,” noted Martin.
Practice seems to be a place where one could learn a lot from Martin. Teammate Danny Isaac pointed out, “Jaden is always giving it his all during practice, and the whole team really respects him for it.”
Effort in practice tends to lead to production in games, and production is what Martin is striving for this season. “I’d love to be putting up 20 to 25 points a game. Even if that doesn’t happen, I’ll be sure to make my mark somehow.”
By the end of the season, Jaden’s mark will definitely be made. He has enough heart, talent, hustle, and skill to “take ‘em to the ‘ship!”
