The one NBA record that fans never thought would be broken was held by Kareem Abdul-Jabar. Then the unimaginable happened: LeBron James broke the record.
The record when it was held by Kareem tallied up to 38,387 total points throughout his career. This record was never close to being touched until LeBron started really racking up points. Then on February 7th, he put up 38 points on the Oklahoma City Thunder to bring his scoring total to 38,390. The NBA has a new all-time scoring leader.
One of LeBron’s biggest fans, freshman David Carr, says that he knew LeBron was going to break the record once he hit around 35,000 points, saying, “LeBron breaking the record was awesome to see, I was watching it live.” After the game the Lakers organization held a celebration for Lebron. Carr also commented, “It is more impressive that Lebron broke the record because he did it in 149 less games.”
Senior basketball player Colin Chan, who is referred to as “The LeBron James of River Hill High School,” thinks that Kareem having the record is more impressive than LeBron having it. Coloin explained that “Kareem having the record was much more impressive because he only has 1 three pointer throughout his entire career whereas Lebron has 2,237, I think that cancels out the more games that Kareem has played.”
Everett Birden, a senior at River Hill, was watching the game on the 7th. He thinks LeBron is the greatest player of all time. He claims that if he were alive and a basketball fan before Lebron got drafted, he would have known that he was going to be a hall of famer by just watching him in high school. “I’ve been a LeBron fan since I started watching basketball in 2013, I knew as soon as he went to the Cavs that he was going to be the GOAT.”
Lastly, Junior Nate Bacon thinks that LeBron is great but not the greatest. Nate has been watching basketball for a long time and most of that has just been highlights of his favorite players on youtube. “I think that Michael Jordan is the G.O.A.T. because of his rings, although it is very impressive that LeBron now has the scoring record, I don’t think that puts him at the top with the best of the best.
For almost 40 years the scoring title was untouched, and LeBron had been working towards that record since he joined the league in 2003.Finally, 20 years later, he was able to beat it. Will there ever be someone else who breaks the record?
