As we roll into November and the days get colder, one popular question remains for this season: Is it too soon to decorate? Many fill with excitement as they put up their lights, wreaths, and ornaments. Others argue it is too early to deck the halls before Thanksgiving has arrived.
Many of those who are against the early decorating reason that each holiday should get its time in the spotlight, believing that by decorating early for Christmas steals the glory of Thanksgiving. Freshman Nyle Siyyid states, “Even though Christmas is a religious holiday, Thanksgiving is a more cultural holiday and should be celebrated before you begin decorating for Christmas.” Freshman, Shrij Desai also comments “it is too warm for holiday decorations” stating that once the temperature gets colder it is a more appropriate time to decorate.
Those who believe there is no “too soon” for decorating argue it brings joy and good spirit to a depressing and gloomy time of year. Sophomore Josh Felsenberg shares, “I think it’s never too early to decorate for holidays, Our lives aren’t very interesting so it makes sense to decorate early since we all need something to look forward to. Fun decorations distract many people from their monotone and repetitious lives especially as the days get colder staying inside more often.” Additionally, Junior Bella Hynes claims, “When Starbucks starts celebrating the holidays I think you can start decorating for the holidays,” as a way to relate it to the things around her.
All in all it is a personal decision whether to decorate early or wait until Thanksgiving passes. It is important to find a balance that works for you, your family, as well as the holidays you celebrate. Perhaps consider decorating in stages, starting with interior decorating and proceeding to exterior decorating as the holiday season approaches.
Whether or not it is too soon to begin decorating for the holiday season is a matter of personal preference and what makes you happy. The timing of decorations becomes less important as long as you decorate with genuine spirit. After all, the holiday season is about sharing love, kindness, and joy regardless of when you start decorating.
