Every year the Girl Scouts sell their iconic delicious cookies to raise money for their troops. While some stand outside of popular stores and areas selling their cookies, others may knock on their neighbors’ doors searching for customers or advertise to their peers. At River Hill, students belonging to various Girl Scouts troops compete for customers who purchase cookies from their troop.
Different troops raise funds for different projects, so choosing who to buy cookies from may be a difficult decision, especially if you have friends from different troops. Abi Asante, a Girl Scout from Troop 1242 conveys that “all proceeds go to giving back to the community. We use a lot of the funds to help fund our service projects, like building bridges, and saving the ecosystem.”
There are a variety of different things that the money from the cookie selling goes to depending on the troup. Some troops are planning on using the money to go on camping trips, horseback riding, trips to national parks, amusement parks, and a variety of other places. Sophomore Brennan W says, “Most of the money goes towards Girl Scouts USA. The money that we get is like 50 cents a box. Some of it goes to individual councils and a lot of it goes towards paying the companies that make cookies…the funds also go to all of the work we do be badges or community service projects.”
There are many different types of Girl Scout cookies. Some popular cookie flavors include Caramel Delights, Thin Mints, Smores Cookies, Peanut Butter Patties, and the New Addition, Adventurfuls. Senior Carolina Alphanso shares that she likes “them all but personally my favorites are Thin Mints because Thin Mints is just a classic and lemonade is just really good.”
Everyone should treat themselves to these yummy treats and or donate to a girl’s Scout troop they know to help give back and to help them achieve their goal.
