Live. Die. Repeat. That’s the gist of Doug Liman’s 2014 movie. Edge of Tomorrow takes place on planet Earth, circa 2150. Animal like alien creatures have invaded the earth and Humanity is on the brink of extinction.
Cage (Tom Cruise) is a high-ranking military officer who is in charge of informing the media and press of the current status of the War. When an order for more troops comes in, Cage is sent to the front lines, much to his disbelief. When he arrives he is greeted by a dimwitted and stereotypical army sergeant who shows no sympathy for Cage’s selfishness. Cage is shown to his Barracks where he meets his new squadron and is informed that Humanity is preparing for an all out assault on the stronghold of the Alien invaders. A “D-Day v2” it is coined.
Cage is given virtually no training, and just a few short hours later he is on a futuristic helicopter on his way to the biggest military operation in human history. After an epic speech from his sergeant, the helicopter is ripped open by enemy fire and all hell breaks lose. Cage hits the beach, and is surrounded by death and devastation as Humanity begins to lose the war convincingly. Cage is surrounded on all sides but manages to kill an alien captain, whose blood ironically spills all over Cage and melts his flesh, killing him slowly.
As Cage breathes his last breaths, he closes his eyes only to reopen them seconds later. When he reopens them, he finds himself back at base, being yelled at by the same sergeant as if yesterday was repeating itself. Cage soon finds out that every time he dies, he’s sent back to that same moment in time. The movie follows his hilarious and epic adventures as he seeks to alter the fate of humanity with his newfound immortality.
If there’s anything this movie did right, it’s action. The graphics and visuals are top notch and you’ll find yourself in awe during every action scene (which there are plenty of.) The movie also has a compelling and original storyline without being confusing (don’t worry, this isn’t Inception.) The film is very well done, and with action film legend Tom Cruise starring as the main character in this film, I can guarantee you that Edge of Tomorrow is a movie you shouldn’t wait until Tomorrow to watch.
