As winter approaches, River Hill is gearing up for an exciting season of new sports. From indoor track to winter cheer, many are eager to get involved and showcase their skills this winter.
Basketball player Layla Arthurton shares her excitement about the start of a new season. “Basketball is a sport that I can see myself playing in college. It’s my chance to show off my skills and take control of the court.” This year, Layla is focused on making the varsity team, determined to prove her growth since last season. “I’ve been working hard all summer, and with my experience from last year, I know it will pay off.”
However, the road to success isn’t always easy. Basketball player Yvonne Bonnah admits to feeling nervous about the upcoming tryouts. “I know I give my best and leave everything on the court, but the pressure to make the team is real,” she says. Despite her nerves, Yvonne has some valuable advice for newcomers. “For any incoming freshmen, don’t worry too much about making the team. Focus on your gameplay and have fun.” She also highlights the supportive environment on the girls’ basketball team: “It’s such a welcoming community where everyone supports each other, no matter where you are in your journey.”
Sophomore Wasif Khalid is also preparing for his first basketball tryouts, and while he’s excited, he admits to feeling the pressure. “I’ve been practicing hard, but this is my first time trying out, so I’m nervous,” Wasif confesses. “Even if I don’t make it, at least I’ll know I gave it my all.” The pressure of trying out for the first time can be overwhelming, but Wasif remains determined to keep his confidence intact. “What I’m going to do is focus on my game and keep the pressure down,” he says.
For C.J. Ortanez, who has tried out before, not making the team hasn’t discouraged him. “Even though I didn’t make the team last time, it doesn’t put me down,” he says. “I’ve practiced a lot this year, and I’m excited to try again. It’s always great to see my friends and play basketball with them.”
Whether making the team or not, the River Hill basketball community remains welcoming and supportive. It’s not just about the outcome but the experience, and the friendships formed along the way. As the season begins, the spirit of perseverance shines through. After all, trying out opens the door to lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences. So, take the leap and try out for a new sport this winter. It’s a win-win!
