After losing in the second round of playoffs last season to Glenelg high school, the River Hill varsity softball team is back at it, and ready to win. Head Coach Ms. Rosenbaum says that the team has an advantage this season prior to others, as there are many “upperclassmen who started on varsity as a freshman, giving them a lot of extra experience. It has been very exciting to watch them grow.”
One of the previously mentioned returning players is Delanie Vintz, a junior who has been on varsity softball all of high school and has played club softball since elementary school. Vintz states that “my softball experience has always been so fun and I get excited every time March 1st rolls around because I love my team so much!” Softball has always been Delanie’s favorite sport, so she loves finally getting back onto the field.
The positive energy that revolves around the team makes them even more likely to succeed, as they all have the same goal: to win.
The RHHS team has always been a big competitor, but they have faced many major opponents over the years, earning an 8-10 record last year for overall wins to losses. The softball team at River Hill is well respected, being known for their amazing team chemistry on and off the field. Coach Rosenbaum is also a very respected part of the team, as she was on the varsity team herself during her time as a student at River Hill.
Cassie Jeng is a junior currently on the varsity team for her second year, getting pulled up her sophomore year. When asked about the team chemistry, she states that “the season just started and we are all really close and supportive of one another.” Jeng plays right outfield and also likes to play shortstop.
The team played their first out of county scrimmage against Paint Branch high school, starting the season with a win! Jeng states “we won our first scrimmage out of the county, which we didn’t do last year. We have so many amazing players and are all able to communicate and work together really well, which makes for a successful team and dynamic.”
The junior varsity team looks up to the varsity team immensely, as they represent the amazing potential each junior varsity member can have. Sophomore and JV catcher Amber Mosley expresses how impressed she is by the skills of the varsity members. Moseley states how “varsity players are very fluid and the ball is not in their glove for more than a second before it is in the air, making me really want to go out and practice my catching and throwing.”
With a wish of good luck to her old team, Varsity softball alumni Sara Miller says “keep working hard and power through the tough games. The goal of softball is literally who can fail the least, so don’t get upset. Stay focused and work hard!”
The River Hill varsity softball team has to potential to succeed. Will they? Go Hawks!
