Excitement ran high in River Hill’s Information Center as the Delta Scholars held their annual fall recognition ceremony the evening of October 7, 2015. In front of an intimate audience of friends and family, Delta Scholars initiated fourteen new members to its highly recognized club focusing on culture, class and confidence.
Assistant Principal Dr. Napoleon Saunders kicked off the event with a speech recognizing parents and students, as well as Ms. Diettra Allen, who played a key role in developing River Hill’s Delta Scholars Program. Saunders thanked Allen “who really has done a lot for these kids by putting all of these things together for them.”
The ceremony also included many important members of the program who were in attendance including co-chair of Delta Scholars Tonya Grice, and River Hill Delta Scholars advisor Liz Rodgers. They also made speeches congratulating the new scholars.
Guest speaker Monica Hamilton gave a riveting speech regarding the lack of women of color in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, how new scholars can become STEM workers, as well as how new members should carry themselves as Delta Scholars.
At the end of the ceremony each new scholar was awarded a red pin in honor of their achievements. Then, collectively, the group swore an oath to uphold their esteemed club. Congratulations Ladies!
