The United Kingdom has faced increasing concerns over knife-related crimes in recent years, prompting authorities to implement stricter measures to ensure public safety. One such measure that has stirred significant debate is the zombie knife and machete ban taking effect in September. This ban specifically targets a type of bladed weapon with a distinctive and menacing appearance, often associated with violence and criminal activities.
The term “zombie knife” refers to a distinctive type of blade that gained notoriety for its menacing appearance, often featuring serrated edges, colorful designs, and eerie themes. These knives were not only symbols of intimidation but also became popular among criminals seeking a weapon with a heightened visual impact.
They have also begun to roll out the ban of knives like machetes as they are huge knives that can cause serious bodily harm. While some believe that this will help lower mortality rates, others believe that it will not do anything. Ayo Somori, a sophomore, said “People are still gonna die either way.” He believes that even with the ban coming to effect it will not change anything. This may very well be the case as people can still illegally carry these knives and can easily conceal them. Some also may argue that this is overly restrictive and that this infringes upon the rights of those who use such tools for agricultural or recreational purposes. Ryan Rimmer a sophomore says “Why take these away from people who use them for fun or for work, people are still gonna carry these anyway.” However, some people are against this and believe that the ban of these knives is a large step forward for the U.K.
Assessing the effectiveness of the ban requires time and ongoing evaluation which has not happened yet. However, a more broad banning of these knives back in 2016 suggested a positive impact. Freshman Ayman Ahmed says, “I think this will be a great step in the right direction for the UK, it will reduce the number of casualties caused by these weapons.” According to independent.co.uk, law enforcement agencies have reported a decrease in the availability of zombie knives and restricted machetes since the implementation of the ban. “Noah Marriott, a sophomore stated “I think this will help reduce death, and is a good idea from the UK.”
The UK’s ban on knives has caused controversy, some believe it will negatively affect people in the UK as it can hinder their work or agricultural needs. Others believe that the ban will not do anything at all, and some believe that this is amazing for the UK. The wide range of viewpoints shows how diverse the UK really is and how difficult it is for authorities to create laws that both address public safety issues; and take into account residents’ practical requirements.
