John Wall was voted by the fans to start the 2015 All Star Game in New York City and will be the first Wizard to start in the game since Glibert Arenas did so in 2007. As a result of the growing fan base, Wall was able to get more votes that Kyrie Irving, Dwayne Wade, Jimmy Butler, and Jeff Teague.
Wall being voted in to become a starter shows that DC is back, and better than ever after enduring this long drought of unsuccessful seasons not just in basketball, but in any sport. The last time a DC team won anything meaningful in one of the major three American sports was when the Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1982, and the last time the Wizards won an NBA championship was in 1978.
Over the past four years, we’ve had the privilege of watching this young man grow up into a superstar. From first round pick to starting in the all star game, his career is coming at us, and it is coming at us fast.
What this means for the city, is something more than anybody could have ever hoped for after the 2009-2010 season when the Wizards received the first pick in the draft, which they used to draft Wall. Even then many of the experts were saying the Wizards would have been better off with Boogie Cousins, but Wall now showed them all he was meant for a career in Washington DC.
With many of the votes being received over social media, Wizards fans have proven to be one of the best fan bases in the league, and are alive and ready. The fans could have chosen anybody to represent them to play in New York City, but they chose Wall, they chose DC. People not only in Washington, but all around the league are beginning to respect what is being done in Washington, and what the Wizards represent. They are beginning to see what the future is going to look like for the Wizards, and for the rest of the league.
This will be the first All Star Game start for Wall, with many more to come in his future. The league and fans of the league know what Wall brings to the Wizards can not be replicated by many other point guards, and that Wall is the future of the league.
Watch John Wall, and the Eastern Conference all stars battle the Western Conference all stars on February 15th. Just know that in DC, it’s takeover time.
