As school comes to an end, River Hill students’ main focus is getting in late work and studying for finals. However, just four days after the last day of school, June 18, is Father’s Day. Fathers do a lot for their families, especially those that attend River Hill, and their day of recognition deserves to be known.
Many students were unaware that June 18th is Father’s Day. When asked what falls on June 18th, junior Renato Tejeda replied, “Is it a national holiday?” But even then, Renato does have plans for his dad, describing, “I’m going to Cancun, Mexico with my dad, we’re going for 10 days with family friends.” Father and son bonding time can provide memories that last a lifetime. Renato greatly appreciates his dad, detailing, “he does everything for me, he provides a lot for me and made me who I am today.”
Junior Mahnoor Rao was also unaware of the date of this holiday. However, she says that her family will probably have a memorable day. Mahnoor explains, “We are going to go down to a lake and go fishing, just spend time together as a family.” As of now, it appears that the weather will be perfect for outdoor activities on Father’s Day, not too hot and partly sunny.
Other students don’t have concrete plans for the special day. Junior Jasna Bhambra explains, “I plan to get him a gift, whatever he needs at the moment.” However, just minutes later she concludes, “I think it’s more about the thought than the gift, maybe we’ll go on a walk as a family.” Whether purchasing a gift or just spending time with their fathers, everyone who has the opportunity should show their appreciation in some way on June 18th. Jasna further describes, “I appreciate that my dad is present in my life, and he can be really funny with the way he acts.”
Adila Farhana Ahamed, a junior, describes that her family, “has no concrete plans yet, but we’ll probably have dinner out somewhere nice and cake.” She knows her dad’s favorite food, he loves pasta so Italian seems the best dinner option. What Adila appreciates about her father includes, “he’s always supportive of what I do and he’s a chill person to be around. He’s more like a friend than a dad.”
Similar to Adila, junior Hasan Mirasyedi shares his plans for Father’s Day, commenting, “I plan on getting my dad a gift and taking him out to dinner somewhere, probably a fried chicken place.” Sitting down for dinner and just having a conversation can be very meaningful to family members, especially when it happens on rare occasions. Hasan values his father, explaining,“I appreciate how much he does for me and he pays a lot of money for soccer and takes a lot of time out of his day for me.”
While a lot of excitement happens for kids as school comes to an end, Father’s Day should not be overshadowed. Buy a gift, write a card, spend time as a family, or do any other activity to show appreciation for dads on June 18th.
