From Diamond Dynasty to the Negro Leagues, MLB the show 23 has it all. On March 24th, MLB The Show released Marlins’ in-fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the cover.
The game was developed by San Diego Studios on Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch, and it allows players to build teams of future, current, and old players to play against other people.
The game has only been released for one month and already 2.4 million people have been hitting home runs and winning games. The fan base helps determine what happens in the game. For example, fans can choose which MLB players get supercharged. A supercharged player is a playable character that receives boosts to their abilities in game for doing things in real life, for example hitting 3 home runs in one single game.
This year The Show has added many new legends. Some of the new players include Mark Mcgwire, Sammy Sosa, and Derek Jeter. Ever since 2016,when he was taken out, players have been waiting for Derek Jeter to come back in the game. And now that he is on the Legend cover of the game, it was fitting to add him back into the best baseball game available.
One of the new game modes in MLB the Show 23 is the Negro League story lines. This game mode is unlike any other, and it is the first time any baseball game has integrated the Negro Leagues. How it works is there are eight players who played in The Negro Leagues. These include Satchel Paige, Rube Foster, Hank Thompson, and Buck O’Neill. Each player has their own set of storylines that explain their significance and their story in the league. All of the videos are narrated by the Negro League Museum president, Bob Kendrick.
Another new addition to the game is having 99 overall cards straight from day one. In the past, there would be lower overall cards you would have to earn, and as you progressed more, higher rated cards would come out. This year they decided to change that. With the World Baseball Classic just coming to an end right before the game came out, this gave them a huge opportunity to add many new international baseball players into the show. Instead of being able to use all the cards you want all year, they made certain cards into certain sets. The way it works is there is a season in rank seasons for 50 days, and once that 50 days expires, it moves on to set two. However, during set two you are still allowed to set one card until set three. After that you will have to select one card that you want to use from set one and turn it into a wild card.
Diamond Dynasty is a game mode in which you collect cards of players who are past, present, and future that you can put onto a team that you can play against other people with.
One of the most highly requested features in Diamond Dynasty has come back and that is team affinity. In team affinity, your goal is to collect all the cards from all the 30 teams in the MLB. The player would do this by playing the game with the cards they get from the program. They would get program stars towards the players that they want to get once they get enough Stars they get the player, simple enough. These missions are getting parallel XP with certain players that you obtain.
Parallel XP is what you get when you play with certain cards and as you get more and more the cards get upgraded. When you get the card it is at parallel zero and it is your job to get it all the way to your superfractor or parallel 5. This requires you getting 10,000 parallel XP.
Freshman, Keyan Livengood, stated “I think the game is pretty mediocre, but the graphics are better.”
With so many things to do in MLB the Show 23 it is understandable why I have spent 83 hours in the game during just the first month. The only thing left to say is what are you waiting for?
