It’s that time of the year when temperatures are dropping to below freezing, and the walk from your car to the school in the morning feels like a trek on Mount Everest. Don’t feel like you have to sacrifice style for warmth. Now, this doesn’t mean you should wear flip-flops and shorts to school in this weather, but you don’t have to bundle yourself in sweats everyday with these simple additions to your wardrobe.
The classic “I-don’t-feel-like-dressing-up” lazy morning outfit: sweatshirt and sweatpants, or pajamas if you dare. Brands like Forever 21 and Cotton On have created fashionable options with designs and embellishments. Paired with some nice kicks, these stylish sweats will help you to not look like you rolled out of bed 10 minutes before the first school bell.
Plaid (or flannel) shirts can be found during any season and can be easily layered with t-shirts and paired with any bottoms for a comfortable yet stylish outfit. This winter, plaid is resurfacing big time. Plaid shirts, sweaters, leggings, scarves, and coats – trends set by designer runways – are everywhere now. Try plaid containing warm colors like reds and browns but also greens and deep blues.
A neutral white and black color scheme is all you need to be chic this winter. A mix of these subtle hues can make a statement, and if you’re very daring, add a bright pop of color to your neutral outfit. Try it with white or gray sweaters, black leather jackets, and a brightly colored scarf or other accessories.
Step into style with leather boots, suede boots, combat boots, knee-high boots, booties, and more. The boots trend that started over two years ago is still circulating today. Boots are a must-have for the winter as they add sleek structure to outfits. Combat and Timberland-style boots are perfect for everyday wear, and the ladies can dress up any outfit with some tall boots and booties.
Sweaters are suitable for any weather; however, in this winter weather, sweaters can be your best friends for layering. Sweaters come in many different materials, colors, and styles. Thin crewneck and v-neck sweaters can be layered over collared shirts, while cardigans can be worn with anything. Oversized, thick sweaters are definitely a staple, as well.
Our parents are probably familiar with this fashion trend; however, turtlenecks (or polonecks) recently have been tailored for young ages. Yes, sweater-and-scarf pairings are still trendy, but adding turtlenecks to your wardrobe will keep you just as warm. Find and pair thick turtleneck sweaters with jeans or leggings and boots.
Never underestimate accessories. Hats and scarves are both must-haves for this season. Although you can’t wear hats in school, it doesn’t hurt to throw on a beanie on your way here. Otherwise, try beanies, fedoras, and wool hats when you are going out on the weekends. Scarves will also be your best friends in this cold weather. Because there are so many styles of scarves, any scarf will be in-style.
Look out for these styles the next time you’re at the mall or shopping online. Or, if you already have some of these items, pull them out of your closet and start wearing them now.
