River Hill High School will soon introduces a new backpack check policy to promote safety. Beginning in May, students will be subject to a backpack check at the start of each school day.
The new policy was implemented after a recent rise in school-related incidents like people bringing too many snacks, prompting administrators to take proactive measures. The backpack checks are intended to detect any prohibited items, such as makeup and off brand AirPods, that students may attempt to bring onto school grounds with bad intentions.
An administrator stated, “The safety of our students is our top priority. With this new policy, we hope to provide a secure learning environment where students can feel safe and comfortable and not constantly fall asleep.”
The backpack checks have received mixed reactions from students. Some have expressed concerns about doing too much, while others see it as an interesting take
A Sophomore student commented, “I understand that it’s for our safety, but it’s still a bit invasive. I don’t want someone going through my personal belongings every morning.”
On the other hand, senior Emily Davis, shared, “I think it’s a good idea. There have been too many incidents like back pain from walking up the stairs with heavy book bags, and if this can prevent something bad from happening, then I’m all for it.”
The backpack checks will be conducted by trained staff members, the therapy dogs, who will inspect the contents of each student’s backpack. Any food will be confiscated and eaten by the dogs. In addition, students may face disciplinary action like being in time out.
While the new policy has caused some controversy, administrators are confident that it will ultimately promote a safer learning environment for all students.
