The halls of River Hill are constantly filled with students walking to their classes with their earbuds in and headphones pumped to the max volume, but what is it that they’re really listening to? From throwbacks to recent hits, River Hill students reveal their current favorite songs at the moment.
Despite what some may primarily believe, many students’ favorite jams are decades old. Junior Piper Stephan’s favorite throwback to dance to while doing her physics homework is “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira because “hips don’t lie,” explains Piper. It seems like 2000s music, whether it be pop or indie rock, are hits with the River Hill crowd. Senior Carter Nierle declares that his favorite song right now is “Under Control” by The Strokes because of a simple reason really–he says, “I like it when the singer says the words and the guitars are fun…That’s music for you.”
Upbeat and fun songs being favorites among the student population was most certainly a trend. Senior Jason Nguyen explains “nice weather means I can play music and drive with my windows down” and that his favorite song to listen to while doing that is “Boomerang” by P-Lo. American singer, SZA, is more popular than ever at the moment with her new album debuting just last year, but Senior Leah Nesmith has one of her older songs, “Sweet November” playing on repeat because “it’s SZA and it’s perfect” Leah describes.
It is very interesting to see students’ different approaches to having favorite songs; some stick to the same artists, and some enjoy branching out more.
The Swifties at River Hill are of course religiously listening to Taylor Swift’s music–new and old. Senior Ellie Axler’s favorite song right now is “All Of The Girls You Loved Before” because she absolutely loves T.S. Taylor has had some new releases, but of course her older songs are quite nostalgic for her fans. Many students, like Senior August Hao, aim to “find new fun music” by “listening to a lot of Spotify recommended mixes” though his most listened to songs this month were “Partners in Crime” by Finneas and “Bloom” by Surfaces.
Branching out into different genres of music as well as re-discovering throwbacks is always an exciting thing and it’s great to see the wide variety of music that River Hill students are currently loving right now. So which of these recommendations are you gonna give a try?
