Love fills the air at River Hill on Valentine’s Day as many students were found giving gifts, walking around the decorated halls, or simply just wearing red or pink to school. As some found joy in the holiday by celebrating with their significant others or friends, others decided to completely disregard the holiday.
Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that some people don’t feel the need to celebrate as much and share their love with people around them. However, many people have decided to act like it is just another normal day. For senior Becca Tow, she described her feelings as, “It is fun to dress up and I like pink and red and get candy sometimes, but it really doesn’t feel like a holiday if you’re single.” These feelings are also described by many other students who don’t have a significant other, as they feel this holiday isn’t for them. Senior Mishal Alamgir explains, “I was so excited for Valentine’s Day. I like seeing other people be happy and share love even if I don’t get to fully participate in it.”
Going down memory lane, Valentine’s Day was one of those holidays in elementary school that truly sparked excitement. As it is her last year in high school, senior Rishika Patibandla explained, “I remember handing out cute cards to everyone, and I feel like I’m missing elementary school a little bit right now because this year it’s just not fun.” Some students and teachers gave out candy to their students to spread the love. To some extent, there was effort put into making February 14th special as Mrs. Shagogue decorated the media center with lots of hearts and x’s and o’s. Sometimes it takes a little bit of spirit to make the day something more than it seems to be.
Some students took Valentine’s Day to a new level and got into the spirit of giving to the ones they love and celebrating the holiday for what it truly is supposed to be. To make the most out of something that might not be special is a challenge but for Valentine’s Day, can make someone feel special and like it’s meant to be. Senior Eje Okojie took a deep dive into the meaning of Valentine’s Day and stated, “ It’s for who you love that matters not who loves you. This day is for spreading love, and in the future that love will return back to you.”
