Although it is widely believed that high school is extremely demanding, there are definitely some fun aspects to it. With a variety of clubs and activities offered at River Hill, students are finding much joy and excitement while expanding their interests. There is definitely a place for everyone to come together to pursue their passions, learn new things, and make new connections.
Sophomore Gina Dhaliwal is enthusiastic to join Best Buddies, and exclaims, “I love the energy they give off. Best Buddies is the club that works with the students in the special education program. Gina has not officially signed up for the club yet, but is excited to sign up. She also plans on joining Angel’s Network, an organization that helps groups in need through donations towards charitable causes, and Active Minds, which promotes the importance of mental health.
Many students believe that clubs are great activities to be a part of. Junior Charlotte Krausz comments that “it’s nice to hang out with friends” in Academic Bowl. Additionally, Gina remarks, “[Clubs are] inclusive environments. You can meet a lot of new cool people and a lot of friends, and you get to experience a lot. Even if the friendships don’t work out and it’s not a club that you’re interested in, at least you got to experience it.”
However, some clubs require major time commitments. Junior Smera Singh is the secretary for National French Honors Society, where she records attendance for meetings, sends out announcements, and makes sure that everyone is involved. Although she does have to dedicate a lot of time to it, Smera believes that the position is manageable. She states, “[It is a] club that you do have to dedicate yourself to, but it’s not an extreme amount of time. A lot of the clubs are run by students and they also have [a] very limited amount of time on their hands, so it is work, but it’s not so much.”
Junior Vyahruthi Anagani is the Vice President of a club called Indian Fusion Dance. She describes Indian Fusion Dance as “a club where people who have experience in Bollywood or classical music, or people who just want to dance, have a community to [do so] in these form[s] of dances. They’re usually quite separate, and in Fusion we put them together and we just have fun.” She believes that being the Vice President is sometimes challenging, but she enjoys taking charge in this club because it is something that she likes being a part of.
Students are greatly enjoying taking part in different types of clubs, and are interested in continuing these activities throughout the school year. They believe that, although still present within the school environment, clubs allow students to spend time away from their studies and connect with their peers. When asked why she would like to continue these clubs, Smera shares, “They’re things that I generally find fun.”
“I really like the people, I really like the concepts, and what they’re working towards,” Gina concludes.
