River Hill students have just started their third week of school; they are still getting used to waking up early and having a solid daily schedule. Many enjoy seeing their friends every day, but that raises the question of whether going to school is even enjoyable.
For many students, being back in a social environment is extremely helpful to up their mood for the day. Multiple seniors including Anita Mosbriantanha stated, “Having Friday night lights back is so fun. Being on the cheer team it is so fun to hype up the crowd and see the whole student section having fun supporting our football team.” Junior Jessica Greenberg agrees that football games are her favorite part about being back at school as she explained, “Being able to hang out with my friends and show our spirit by dressing up for the themes is honestly so fun!”
Some students feel like they are back to reality as they are starting to have homework and less time to do hobbies or social activities. Senior Mishal Alamgir said that “AP Chem is already stressing me out. At this point, I am wondering why I even signed up for this class.” From a different perspective, Senior Priyanshi Patel elaborated, “My course load this year is pretty good. I don’t feel too stressed out and I am happy with my senior year so far.”
As juniors and seniors have the luxury of driving to school, some think that the parking lot is extremely disorganized in the morning or afternoon. Senior Amanda Xu pointed out that her least favorite part of school was the parking lot after school, “It makes no sense how I get out of school at 2:15 and have to wait to get out of the parking lot until 2:30.” said Amanda. “The mornings are okay because not everyone is rushing to get into school.”
One thing that draws many students into the new year is fall sports. Whether they are participating in the sport or cheering from the sidelines, it is a time for our school to come together. Junior Grace Leska, who has been playing varsity volleyball her whole high school career, explains, “I am so excited to be back on the court with my teammates again. Being able to play with my best friend every day is one of the things I look forward to.”
This year, teachers have been urging students to not be on their phones so frequently. A lot of students do not enjoy the fact that they can not go on their phone when they want to, including freshman Molly Maxwell who stated, “It is just annoying how even if I check the time, my teacher is watching me like a hawk. It seems so unnecessary to me.” Many other students felt the same way about this new phone policy and how it feels restricting and like a punishment even though it is the start of a new year.
To many, school is one of those places where you will have mixed emotions throughout the day. Even though there will always be that one class that everyone dreads, lunch is right around the corner where you get to put all of the stress away and enjoy being with your friends and truly take in the good times that can be experienced.
