Israel continues to be the subject of international press scrutiny, with new developments warranting the attention of leaders across the globe occurring rapidly. Just weeks prior, the Jewish nation was locked into a fierce conflict with its Arab neighbor and rival Palestine, with images of the accompanying missile exchange circulating widely across international media. Less than a month after a ceasefire temporarily resolving such a conflict was declared, the State of Israel is once again the focus of global reporting, this time over the political inferno centered upon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his potential ousting.
The 12-year tenure of Netanyahu is in danger of coming to an abrupt conclusion as a political coalition of Netanyahu’s opponents appears to have achieved a razor-thin majority in the nation’s parliament, amassing enough power to unseat the prime minister by means of a parliamentary election. The party has scheduled such an election for Sunday, June 13th. Such an election is the culmination of years-long efforts by Netanyahu’s opposition to oust him on the basis of scandals and divisions that he has purportedly produced while in office, with the opposition having struggled fiercely to reach its current position of power.
This unseating, if successful, will be what reporters consider to be the most volatile alteration to the status quo in Israel’s recent history. Netanyahu, a figure who is central to global politics, faces the possibility of an abrupt conclusion to the dynasty that he has erected during his 12 years in power, a situation to which he has responded fiercely. If this process of unseating is seen through to completion, a new era, one excluding “the savviest figure in the history of Israel,” will be ushered in.
