Joe Biden was officially elected as the 46th President of the United States after several long and stressful days of counting the remaining mail in ballots. Not only did Joe Biden beat an incumbent President, but his running-mate Kamala Harris will make history by becoming the first woman to become Vice President of the United States. Joe Biden will also become the oldest person to be elected as the President of the United States as well, turning 78 at the end of November.
Prior to the election, Biden was urging citizens to remain patient and stay calm because of how long the ballot counting process would take. Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania were key states in determining the outcome of the election; They were taking a lengthy time to count the ballots, and people were getting excited too early. On November 4th, President Donald Trump declared victory because it seemed as if the electoral college voting result outcomes were in his favor. However, as the final mail-in ballots were being counted, Trump was actually predicted to lose the election. On the late morning of November 7th, Joe Biden was announced the projected winner of the 2020 election. Vice President Elect Kamala Harris broke the news to Biden via a phone call, which was posted onto her instagram and twitter accounts. The video of her victory call consisted of her saying “We did it, we did it Joe! You’re going to be the next President of the United States!” During the time that Biden was announced the winner, Trump was on his golf course in Virginia and tweeted; “ I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!”
On the day that Joe Biden was announced as President-Elect of the United States, many world leaders have congratulated him on his achievement, and a few countries set off fireworks and hosted celebrations alongside the United States. However, Trump said that Biden only won “because the Election was rigged.” In large cities such as New York City, Washington DC, and Philadelphia, the cheering, excitement, and celebration could be heard from miles away. Despite being in a global pandemic, millions of people decided to mask-up and gather in large numbers to celebrate Biden’s win. Even though many people are happy that Biden won, there are still people who believe that the election was rigged, and Trump should have been re-elected. Over the weekend, there were thousands of Trump supporters marching in Washington DC to protest the election results. Donald Trump is the only president in the history of the United States to refuse to concede to the President-Elect, so many of his supporters don’t believe that Biden won fair-and-square. On the Monday after his supporters flooded the streets of DC, Donald Trump tweeted “I won the Election!”
In the end, Joe Biden’s campaign proved effective, winning crucial swing states. Despite Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the election and claiming there was fraud, Joe Biden and his team are hard at working preparing for when he will take office with Kamala Harris in January. The American people have spoken- Joe Biden and Kamala Harris officially won the 2020 Presidential Election.
