Since quarantine has started, there have been many new and binge-worthy shows and movies added to Netflix. One that has become increasingly popular since its release is called The Outer Banks. In The Outer Banks, they describe two divided groups: the Kooks and the Pogues. The Kooks are the more wealthy and preppy families, and the Pogues live on what they call “the cut,” which is the poorer side of town. It follows a group of four friends that belong to the Pogues that find themselves getting into increasing amounts of trouble. The main character, John B., is on the verge of having to go into foster care because his dad disappeared at sea for 9 months. The show is about how he and his friends look for clues that might help him learn the truth about where his father is why he disappeared.
Despite the already interesting plotline, the subplots are part of what makes this show so popular. There are many romantic relationships and blossoming friendships that help keep the viewers fascinated. One of John B.’s friends, Kiera, is crushed on by most of the main friend group, but the pogues have rules and one of them is “No pogue on pogue macking,” meaning no romantic relationships between the members. Additionally, the rivalry between the Kooks and the Pogues continues to make the show captivating. There are a lot of conflicts that arise from it, including a Romeo-and-Juliet-forbidden-romance plotline.
The main storyline is about how John B. and his friends are on a treasure hunt for the gold that his father was searching for when he disappeared. This started when the Pogues discovered a wrecked boat. On the boat, they discovered a dead body, as well as John B’s dad’s old compass, their first clue. This sends them on their treasure hunt all through the Outer Banks of North Carolina. On their hunt, they encounter many dead ends, false leads, and untrustworthy people that discourage their search. But. John B. is unwilling to let it go– he must find what his dad disappeared looking for.
The ending resolves almost all of the questions raised by the mysterious discovery, but not before some significant plot twists, along with a cliffhanger that gives the viewer hope for a season two. Overall, the Outer Banks is definitely worth the watch. It has everything that makes a teen drama remarkable. From romance to partying to thrilling cop chases, this show does not disappoint. There are not any official announcements of a season 2 yet, but without the amount of popularity it has, speculators would not be surprised if Netflix renewed it.
