After a disappointing season last year, River Hill’s girls varsity volleyball team started off great in the 2017-2018 season. With an in-county record of 4-1 and a record of 7-1 overall, the hawks positioned themselves to make a run for the county title. We will find out how great this team performs under pressure over the next two games.

The Hawks first have to travel to Howard to play a tough team with a record of 5-1 in-county. They will then host rival, Atholton in a very intriguing game that will definitely have playoff implications. After winning states last year, Atholton was looked at as the favorite going into the season. But the lady hawks have something to say about that. The lady hawks last loss came all the way back at the beginning of September. This loss to Glenelg actually helped the team become more united. The lady hawks went on to win seven straight games. They hope to keep this winning streak alive and carry the momentum into the playoffs.

Sophomore, Shannon Mccarthy, explains how the team’s season has gone so far.

“We are definitely improved a lot from last year, especially after our first loss to Glenelg. During our seven game win streak the team has really gelled.”

Even the players have recognized what a huge turning point in the season the Glenelg game was. Even though they were defeated 3-1, the team learned more about themselves and worked on their weak spots.

Captains, Amanda Lee, Heidi Li, and Ogenna Umeozulu, have all contributed huge roles in the team’s success. When asked about the team’s weak spots the captains all seemed to think that the team needs to work on giving up less long rallies. After giving up a big group of points, the momentum usually switches and allows the opposing team to take over the game. Senior captain,Heidi Li, commented on the captain’s hard work in practice when she said,

“Whenever the team isn’t focused in practice, Amanda, Ogenna, and I attempt to get the team back on track.”

The team has improved their chemistry gradually over the season. Senior, Amanda Lee, commented on the team’s success compared to the season prior.

“Last year we had a lot of great players but our chemistry wasn’t as good as it is this season. This year our team has really bonded and we are really close.”

The Lady Hawks have sent a message to the rest of the county to watch out. After a disappointing season, they may be overlooked but the players seem to be accepting the idea of being an underdog. Nevertheless, we will see how tough this team really is, come playoff time. GO HAWKS!
