The new school year brings new policies.\u00a0 This school year, there will no longer be Hawktime twice a week, students will have to place phones in backpacks during testing, and English teachers are no longer allowed to teach the \u201cFive Paragraph Essay\u201d.<\/p>\n

Arguably, the biggest change within River Hill has been the subtraction of Monday hawktimes. This presented students with an unnecessary addition of stress. James Fisher, World History teacher at River Hill agrees that this creates unnecessary problems for students. \u201cA lot of kids are overworked and two breaks during the week was very useful,\u201d Fisher explains, \u201cI don\u2019t think there were negative results from hawktimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

A common place students go during hawktime is the art room. Caro Appel, art teacher at River Hill, says that \u201cHawktime was valuable and I\u2019m [Appel] sad that we don\u2019t still have two.\u201d This decrease in hawktime was not River Hill\u2019s administration\u2019s idea, but the board of education\u2019s effort to create \u201cequity across the county,\u201d says Appel, \u201cThis is the first year everyone has access to one hawktime.\u201d<\/p>\n

The infamous five paragraph essay has been commonly taught as a organizational tool to help with writing. Students are taught to write an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.<\/p>\n

However, despite this change, teachers remain optimistic.\u00a0 Lisa Kump, an English teacher, explains that she\u2019s \u201cokay with moving away from the five paragraph essay format, but I\u2019m [Kump] discouraged with the lack of new models being offered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many students succeed by seeing an example of what they need to do. \u201cWe always need models for students,\u201d says Kump.<\/p>\n

As for the new phone policy, teachers choose whether or not to implement the new policy in their classroom. Sybil Kessinger, the health teacher, believes it \u201cshould be unnecessary, but there are always kids who cheat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teachers like Munding and Goodrich strictly employ this rule. However, some\u00a0 teachers like Wester aren\u2019t even aware of the policy change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
