By Babiha Kaur, Digital Editor

Homecoming week at River Hill took place from October 2nd-6th, with the annual dance being held on the 7th. This year’s theme was “House of Cards.” Throughout the week, students had the chance to show their school spirit while dressing up to match each day’s theme.

In general, spirit weeks are meant to get students excited for upcoming events. Senior Aubrey Heiges believes that the purpose of spirit weeks is to “get people hyped up for whatever’s at the end of the week. It’s kind of like a buildup. It makes me more excited.” Similarly, in her opinion, junior Barbara Lembas thinks that the goal of a spirit week is to allow “everyone [to] feel connected to each other. It’s for students to talk with each other more since they’re doing the same thing.”

Every annual homecoming spirit week takes place before the dance. Students enjoy dressing up to match the unique themes. Monday was “House of Shirts day,” where students from each grade dressed up to resemble the different suits of cards. Students sported Hawaiian shirts and flowers on “Tropical Tuesday,” Barbie attire on Wednesday, Adam Sandler outfits on Thursday, and their class t-shirts on Friday.

Students enjoyed taking part in homecoming spirit week because it allowed them to connect with their peers. Sophomore Abi Asante describes, “I think that it’s important to show school spirit, and it’s really fun just to see everybody get together, all dressed the same.” Senior Divya Kumar adds, “I think it’s fun and it’s cool to take coordinated pictures with your friends. It’s something fun you can look back on later.” Barbara agrees, describing, “I just think it’s pretty fun, you match with a lot of people, and you can take pretty funny pictures.” Students are able to make fun memories during homecoming spirit week while also showing their support for the school as a whole.

Although spirit weeks are meant to connect those within the school community, it may not be too effective in doing so. Barbara comments, “I know that that’s their goal, but I don’t know if everyone feels connected to each other honestly. It’s just like, we’re dressed in a similar way, cool, but that’s it. But still, it’s nice that a lot of people are doing the same thing; it’s just [that] we’re not that connected to each other because of it.”

Overall, this year’s homecoming spirit week was deemed a success by many. It achieved its goal of connecting students together, cheering on the football team, and promoting school spirit.

By Babiha Kaur, Digital Editor Homecoming week at River Hill took place from October 2nd-6th, with the annual dance being held on the 7th.
