By Lux Sheplee, Staff Writer

As September comes to an end, students at River Hill scramble to find dates, plan outfits, and buy tickets for the Homecoming dance coming up on October 7th. Homecoming is an exciting event because along with the dance, there’s also the homecoming football game and pep rally the day before homecoming. The theme for the dance this year is House of Cards, and each grade is represented by a suit.

While not particularly excited about the event, Senior Henry Zatkowski plans to attend his last high school homecoming. As this is his first year going with a date, Henry explains, “I’m going with my girlfriend, I’m just gonna ask her if she wants to go and not make a sign or anything.” Henry has remained pretty unimpressed with the past homecomings, and this year’s theme increases his apprehension. He details, “The theme is not very good, I don’t really see the vision.” Regarding his attire, Henry plans to match his date: “she’s wearing a pink dress so I’m gonna get a pink tie to match.”

Bethel Bruk, also a senior, is going with a group of friends to the dance. She had little luck finding a dress in person, so she resorted to online and “ordered a blue one shoulder bodycon dress.” While Bethel showed more enthusiasm than Henry regarding the dance, she agreed with Henry’s thoughts about the theme commenting, “I don’t like the theme, I feel like it’s weird and I don’t like the spirit days.”

Junior Zoe Pachoca is also going with a group of friends to the dance. Zoe ordered her dress in late August: “I picked out my dress, it’s burgundy, sparkly long sleeved and bodycon.” Regarding the theme, Zoe comments, “I think it’s a little weird, I like it but I’m interested to see how they incorporate our school colors.”

Some students, such as sophomore Trey Larose, do not have a clear plan for the dance yet. Trey says, “I might go with my boy Luca, I don’t have an outfit picked out, but I’ll figure it out. I like blue and red so maybe one of those colors.” In contrast with other opinions, Trey explains “I think the theme is amazing, I don’t really know what it’s supposed to mean though.”

Gabi Demuren, the SGA Executive Board President gives a little context to the planning that goes into the event. “We delegate tasks to various committees, with each committee responsible for specific areas like the pep rally, homecoming week spirit, event planning, and the actual dance itself.” Students and staff put a lot of hard work and effort into the homecoming season, and hope to make it a time for all students to enjoy.

As for the theme, Gabi explains, “At the dance, you can expect to see captivating balloon designs that bring the theme to life, and we’ve prepared a special hoco favor, a small deck of cards, for all attendees.”

Homecoming is an event for the students, to help the school build a community and have fun together. Whether you’re going with a date, friends, or riding solo, enjoy your homecoming night on October 7th!

By Lux Sheplee, Staff Writer As September comes to an end, students at River Hill scramble to find dates, plan outfits, and buy tickets for the Homecoming dance coming up on October 7th.
