As the new year approaches, students at River Hill High school are starting to brainstorm their aspirations for the new year. Whether that be personal goals or just hopes for the new year, many high schoolers are looking forward to “re-inventing” themselves.

Indulging in reevaluating some of your life choices sparks change into the improvements you can make in your own life. This could include; getting into shape, eating healthier, stopping procrastination, improving focus, or meeting new people. As senior Sarah Lee states, “I hope to better myself while bringing happiness to others for the new year!”

New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would start tomorrow, next week, next month, or perhaps when the next winter starts. However, when many try to set their goals into play, it’s still pushed off to the back of their mind.

While making goals, it is important to remember to outline practical ideas. Especially for teenagers, it is difficult to set up goals that we know can be risky. For example, I know that many adults tend to set goals to lose a certain amount of weight. A healthier goal for teens would be trying out new healthy habits like playing a sport or walking a dog into their daily routine. Sophomore Jaiden Stoutenborough’s resolution is “I hope 2022 brings better times for myself and everyone around me and to achieve new goals!”

Now, this isn’t to say that all resolutions are unattainable or unrealistic, it’s simply necessary to start small when planning for the new year. Don’t overwhelm yourself or bite off more than you can chew while starting small. Senior Kevin Herrera says, “In 2022, I’m looking forward to improving my mind-body connection by doing yoga and meditation.”

It shouldn’t be too hard to keep up one resolution if you start small, but it only takes one day to break a habit streak. Something to keep in mind is to think of what you want for yourself, not what other people want for you. You know your best interests, so don’t let peer pressure negatively affect your goal setting. Keep your goals beneficial and get excited to implement them in the new year!
